Elder abuse
The Elder Abuse Consultation Centre provides direct, first-line services to older adults living in the CSSS territory who are being abused or neglected, or who are at high risk of mistreatment. Our specialized team of practitioners follows a protocol and intervention guide in situations of abuse. Services to help alleviate situations of abuse or neglect include a variety of psychosocial, medical and/or legal services, normally co-ordinated through case management. Services offered include individual and family counselling for the abused and/or abuser.
Services to the community outside our territory
Aide Abus Aînés Telephone Line: 514-489-2287 OR 1-888-489-2287
Aide Abus Aînés is a provincial telephone line that helps seniors who are victims of abuse and mistreatment. It was implemented by the CSSS Cavendish, on the initiative of the Ministère de la famille et des aînés and in collaboration with the Ministère de la santé et des services sociaux.
As of October 1, 2010, anyone (senior citizen, caregiver, family member, practitioner) can contact the toll-free number between 8:00 a.m. and 8:00 p.m., 7 days a week. Callers have access to professionals who are specialized in elder abuse and who can listen, provide information and crisis intervention over the phone. Depending on the situation and with the consent of the person, practitioners will provide referrals to the appropriate resource in Quebec.
Educational programs to community groups
Speakers are available to go out and speak to community groups about elder abuse detection and prevention. For information on our programs please contact Sarita Israel at (514) 484-7878 ext. 1380.
Multisectorial elder abuse consultation team
Complex cases that require more diverse expertise are referred to the multisectorial Elder Abuse Consultation Team, which meets regularly to discuss cases and provide support, suggestions and referrals to the professionals presenting cases. The Consultation Team is composed of professionals from the Commission des droits de la personne et des droits de la jeunesse, the Public Curator’s Office, the police, a doctor in geriatric practice, lawyers with expertise in elder law and criminal law, a retired public health nurse and social service workers from the Elder Abuse Program.
Table de concertaton sur l'abus envers les aînés du centre-ouest de Montréal
The Table de Concertation sur l’abus envers les aînés du centre-ouest de Montréal was created with the support of the RQCAA in Sept. 2003 as a local initiative to bring together organizations in the centre west area of Montreal to plan a strategy for addressing elder abuse more effectively. The Table serves as a focal point for collective awareness raising in the general public and improving knowledge and collaboration among those who work with older adults in the community.
