Characteristics of the population
There are 119,840 people living on the territory of the CSSS Cavendish, which represents about 7% of the population of Montréal. In terms of sector, it is more privileged than the island of Montréal, unemployment rate is lower as is the percentage of people receiving employment-assistance and the number of people living below the poverty level.
A large portion of the population is aged 65 years and older, which represents 18.3% of the population as opposed to Montréal (15.5%). This number is growing. We also have a larger proportion than in Montréal of families with children (64.1% versus 62.7%).
Another characteristic of the population is the large proportion of people whose mother tongue is another language than French or English (35.2% versus the Montréal average of 32.6%). 40,4% of the population is immigrant (Montréal has 30.7%). And, 10.1% of the immigrant population are new arrivals dating 2001 to 2006 (Montréal counts 7.5%). The territory of the CLSC de NDG–Montréal-Ouest has a greater number of immigrants than the territory of the CLSC René-Cassin.
Regarding the health of the population, it seems better than in Montréal, on average. Life expectancy is higher with men at 77.9 years of age and women at 82.5 years of age (Montréal: men 74.8 years of age and women 81.1 years of age). Deaths caused due to cancer or to respiratory or circulatory diseases are at a lower level than the whole of the Island of Montréal. However, the number of diabetes cases is higher than in Montréal, and that number is increasing.
